Hello from Vegas

It has been a long day here in Vegas, scouring over 100,000 square feet of fashion trade shows so that we can bring you guys the best that we can. But as I sit here in my hotel robe and slippers with my tired feet up, I will tell you that I am the luckiest girl in the world. A very tired, lucky girl.

We definitely picked out some fantasticalness that I cannot WAIT to get in so that everyone can see it. You are going to love it! – I hope – But I definitely love all of it and it’s totally unique and different. There’s sports, there’s fun and there’s fashion. We’re bringing it all this year.

We ended the day cruising around the ‘Street’ show with a beer, checking out what was happening on the 2nd floor. It’s a show with style similar to it’s name and it felt like a Street-style circus. We saw a pair of guys jamming on acoustic guitars together, a game of dice over a pack of cigarettes, half naked promotional girls for various brands, clouds of smoke of multiple varieties and a half pike in the back with an intense skate competition, the last jump height at over 15-feet.

But we also saw the upcoming fashion trends. What’s eventually coming to Texas is already in ‘Street’ and we’re keeping our eyes open. We saw slimmer styles, bold colors, thick glasses and lots of flat bills – girls, boys, young, old. Think Redfoo from LMFAO meets Jay-Z. I can’t wait to see how it’s done when these styles finally reach Plano, Texas.

For now I need some dinner and drinks, but we’ll get back to it tomorrow, finding awesome, unique and super high quality goods you are going to love!

Speech hijacking

I was asked recently to speak at an SMU J-Term luncheon. They wanted me to give a mini-ad for the store, but I was more interested in encouraging students to take advantage of what’s available to them while at SMU. After all, we wouldn’t be near as successful as a store without the support of the local alumni groups and SMU supporters!

What was supposed to be a brief two-minute store promotion turned into a five-minute lecture on attending football games. The statement “Put down your beer and go to the game” might have been made. But what is true is that you can’t sit in your student section and get away with being that outrageous and spirited forever. That guy is so annoying sitting with the grown ups on the other side of the stadium. I know. I was chastised for holding a sign at a game. It annoyed those around me. But the apathy of the alumni side of SMU’s stadium is an entirely different post.

Truly – what I said to those 200 J-Term students is true. This is such an amazing time in your life to be a student. You don’t get it back. I went to nearly every game in the Cotton Bowl, sat with the Kappa Sigma’s and cheered my heart out. I may or may not have attended my first game in khaki shorts, an SMU tee and ball cap from the bookstore. But that, my friends, is part of why I now own the store. I promise to be your sporty personal shopper and you can not only cheer for SMU, but look good doing it. And that does mean wearing something other than the standard issue uniform of short dress and cowboy boots. You can keep the boots. They’re cute, but I’ve got quite a few other fun things for you.

As I step off my soapbox, please hear me: Be stylish, be cute, flirt with a boy or girl, but go to the game! You only get a few of them in your life as a student and there’s truly nothing like being a part of the crowd.

The chilly weather outside calls for something comfy yet cute. Wear the grey and blue hoodie with a white tank underneath with the zip half way and a pair with your comfy jeans. Add a pop of color by adding a hot pink, turquoise blue, or purple scarf.

On a lazy day pair the hoodie with navy blue sweats and sneakers and go for the sporty look.

Randolph Engineering

Occasionally we run across some products we feel are part of our lifestyle brands that have a cool story to tell. Several months ago we came across a sunglass company in Vegas, previously suggested by a friend – Randolph Engineering (RE). RE  is based out of Randolph, MA, and has been the standard issue equipment to the US Military and Air Forces all over the world since 1982. Each pair is made here in the USA, in Randolph, MA, with over 200 production steps, mostly by hand. Each pair comes with a lifetime guarantee.

If the whole “standard issue equipment” isn’t enough for you, they’re quite fashionable as well. Don Draper sports the Gold Aviators with the Gray Polarized lenses and bayonet temples in Mad Men. As they say, how can Don Draper be wrong? As well, fashion designer, Michael Bastian, has been using RE’s on all his runway models for years. They are the true all american look.

RE’s have now caught the eye of many fashion forward designers, movie stylists and celebrities. The reason being that Randolph Engineering is still a family owned company, carefully dedicated to the original style of the aviator at an unbeatable quality.

We’ve each already selected our favorites – Scott the Aviator and Jana the Concorde, as they are a truly uni-sex style. We love finding new things that fit with the quality and style you’ve come to expect from us. And we’ll always keep looking. Plus, keeping things made in the USA is always important to us. But right now, we’re excited to share Randolph Engineering. We’ve got them in the store. Come check them out.

New Face in Town

We’ve added a new face to our Gameday Collection and we couldn’t be more excited to share her with you. BonBon by Micah Yancey is the newest designer jewelry collection joining the already popular Rory Ashton for Gameday in-store. We can’t keep either of these baubles in stock. They’re perfect for looking glam at the game or just finding a pair you love to wear any day!

Austin Fashion Awards 2010 Best Designer Nominee, Micah Yancey Rust created Micah Yancey Jewelry in 2006, and in 2008, the BonBon line was born. This collection includes “confectionery couture” and “confectionery vintage” earrings, necklaces, and bracelets- each enticing, bright, luscious, and unique. Micah believes that jewelry should be simple, clean, well-made, sophisticated and aligned with current fashion trends. These are the principles on which she based her BonBon jewelry line. She has a deep appreciation for beautiful and unique semi- precious stones and she chooses each stone for her handmade pieces very carefully. Many of the stones in this line look delicious enough to eat, which explains her inspiration for the name, BonBon (‘candy’ in French). She uses 14 karat gold- filled and sterling silver metals, along with unique vintage items for her designs. No two pieces are exactly alike.

We here at Gameday Cloth have a colored collection individually selected to match team colors. It’s a perfect addition. Come check it out! You can find BonBon at a handful of stores in Austin, Georgetown and Gainesville, but this is her first Dallas location! Happy to be the first – always!

What are your player colors?

I live in Dallas, Texas, home of the Cowboys. I grew up half Houston Oiler and half Atlanta Falcon, with a minor Phoenix Cardinals stint. I chose the New York Jets over the Giants when I lived in The Big Apple. Now what in the world do I wear to watch the Super Bowl?

What are you wearing?

I don’t like the Green Bay Packers or the Pittsburgh Steelers. I will not cheer for Roethlisberger. I respect Aaron Rodgers. All of my team options are out. Who do I wave my spirit fingers for in a couple weeks?

I have the answer for all of you out there.

I wrote a blog about NFL Gameday Fashion a bit back. I wrote that Tebow fans should support him in FL gear instead of whichever team colors he currently sports – unless of course they’re already fans of said team. It’s the premise Fantasy Leagues exist upon. You cheer on individual players over an entire team – again, unless of course you’re already a fan of said team.

Since my favorite sport is NCAA College Football, this makes it easy. I’ve spent every Fall since high school wearing red and black for the UGA Bulldawgs! I love me some Matthew Stafford. I don’t care about the Detroit Lions whatsoever. But when he’s lobbing passes, I’m cheering. I met Vince Young on Draft Night at Marquee in NYC, as well as cheered the Longhorns all season. (I grew up with a Father in burnt orange every weekend). He’s a gentleman – with a few minor tantrums -  and is a splendid athlete. I’ve cheered for him at Tennessee and may end up cheering for him as a…Viking? Don’t care for either team as a whole.

Think about it. You know you have favorite players that have changed teams over the years. Do you just abandon them? Or do you still kind of follow  them throughout the season, albeit, continuing to cheer on your entire favorite team.

In addition to my boys spread across teams from coast to coast I cheer for the Cowboys. Am I bandwagon? Let’s just say I didn’t grow up loving them, but I’ve enjoyed watching them for 12 years now. But even on the team, I have favorite and not-so-favorite players.

All of this brings me back to my initial question – what do I wear on Sunday February 6th? Well, I’ll tell you.

Red and blue.

What?! Yes, red and blue. Two words: Emmanuel Sanders. Pony Up. I’m not cheering for the Packers or the Steelers. Whoever wins, wins. But my boy and fellow SMU alum will get my full support on Gameday. I will be maintaining my player loyalty. I even had a customer come in admitting her son, a Longhorn fan, is cheering for the Packers because of Jermichael Finley. No other reason.

If you want to jump on and support a team, do it. And look good doing so. You should probably stop in Gameday Cloth to make certain you’re looking your sports fashion best; especially since the pressure is on with all the millions of visiting fans to DFW. But otherwise, pick a player and rock out their college colors. We could probably keep you fashionable for that choice too.

Red and blue. Pony Up.
